Apparently. I'm not convinced, but that might be because I'm not a woman.

I do know that it's quite a popular thing to give up for Lent though. I haven't, but I wonder how many of you have?

I see that Cadbury's have done their bit to reduce the tempation by recalling a lot of their products again. Typically I am slightly behind with the times but I will share my opinions on the issue nonetheless. I was thinking about the recall earlier, as you do, and thinking that this really is bureacracy gone mad, to coin a phrase.

If I have understood it correctly, it is all to do with the fact that the chocolate in question has not been labelled properly ; specifically it lacks a nut allergy warning. Now, forgive me if I am wrong, but if you had purchased said chocolate and heard about the recall you would now be aware of the potential risk. Returning the chocolate for a correctly labelled replacement would do nothing to change the fact that if you're allergic to nuts then eating it might not be a good idea. In fact, it would acheive nothing bar some unnecessary wastage and some extra costs for Cadbury's.

Brilliant.

It is a sad fact that due to modern diets, the mere smell of nuts can send those who are extremely allergic to nuts into a very bad reaction. Thus, let us not imagine what it would do to said sufferers if they ate such a produft. Surely you are not weighing up lives against a product recall?

No, of course I'm not weighing up lives against a product recall.

I'm just questioning the need for a recall over a general advertisement saying that "these products contain nuts". After all if you hear the recall notices you'd have heard such an advertisement.

I've given up chocolate for lent. And cheese! I think it's actually going to be harder with the cheese than the chocolate!

Mmmm cheese. There's a good suggestion for something to give up for Lent. I too would find it harder than chocolate, that's for sure.

Following the letters page in last Wednesday's Metro and the follow-up comment on this post I’m pleased to see that the beginnings of a debate are brewing, and I intend to use this post to pick up the baton again.
