Should the NHS pay for hospital chaplains?

Personally, I don't think that the NHS should fund treatment for lung
cancer. It should be funded by smokers. After all, they are the ones
who will probably need it more than anyone else. If they choose to
smoke that's their choice, but why should I have to pay more in taxes
because of their lifestyle choices?

I have to say I totally disagree with you there. The whole founding principle of the NHS is to provide trestment to all. That's like saying i should have had to pay when i broke my leg because i chose to cycle. Or that women should pay to give birth because they chose to get pregnant. Every accident or illness has a cause of some sort.

Panic not, Maria, I totally disagree with myself there as well. The post was a deliberately controversial response to the idiot I saw on BBC Breakfast this morning who said that the NHS shouldn't pay for hospital chaplains because he didn't want to fund other people's lifestyle choices.

As you can see, it's a dangerous precedent...

I take it then that you agree a hospital should provide spirtual care for people of other faith's? (Rabbi's, Imam's etc)

Following the letters page in last Wednesday's Metro and the follow-up comment on this post I’m pleased to see that the beginnings of a debate are brewing, and I intend to use this post to pick up the baton again.
